There is a sound to Bathukamma before there is a sight of it. Somewhere in the lane, just after dusk, the women begin to clap in a slow circle and sing to Gauri — and you know the flowers have come out. For nine nights across Telangana, and nowhere more joyfully than in Hyderabad, the festival turns every courtyard into a small garden and every woman into her most festive self. And in this part of the country, that means one thing above all: a cheera.
If you are a Telugu woman planning your wardrobe for the nine days — or buying pattu cheeralu for your mother, your daughter, your whole family — this is a guide from a saree house that has dressed Hyderabad's women for the season since 1997, right in the heart of Abids.

Bathukamma pandaga — a festival built from flowers
Bathukamma is Telangana's own, a floral festival celebrated almost entirely by women, honouring Goddess Gauri and the quiet bond between earth, water and everything that grows. As the monsoon ends, seasonal blooms open across the countryside: the bright yellow tangedu, the deep magenta gunuka (celosia), banti marigold, and greenery gathered by the armful. These are stacked into concentric cones — flower upon flower, without a single thread to hold them — until each Bathukamma stands like a small, living temple. A ball of turmeric, worshipped as Gauri herself, is placed at the very top.
Then the women gather. They set the Bathukamma in the centre of the courtyard, move around it in a widening circle, clap in rhythm and sing the Bathukamma paatalu passed down through generations. On the final evening the flowers are carried to a lake or cheruvu and set gently on the water. It is one of the very few festivals in India led, sung and danced entirely by women — and getting dressed for it is half the celebration.
The nine days of Bathukamma
Bathukamma unfolds over nine days, each with its own name and its own mood, building from a gentle first evening to the great finale.
- Engili Pula Bathukamma — the quiet opening, the first flowers of the season
- Atukula Bathukamma — flattened rice offered to the goddess
- Muddapappu Bathukamma — softened lentils and jaggery
- Nanabiyyam Bathukamma — soaked rice, milk and sugar
- Atla Bathukamma — the day of dosa-like atlu
- Aligina Bathukamma — a day of rest
- Vepakayala Bathukamma — sweets shaped like neem fruit
- Vennamuddala Bathukamma — butter and sugar
- Saddula Bathukamma — the grand finale and immersion
The ninth night, Saddula Bathukamma, is the one everyone dresses for — the largest gatherings, the heaviest pattu, and the immersion at places like Tank Bund and Hussain Sagar.
The calendar — and the Sunday that matters most
Bathukamma 2026 runs from around 10 October through to its finale, Saddula Bathukamma on Sunday, 18 October. Maha Navami and Dussehra follow on the 19th and 20th, so the festive drape carries straight through the long weekend. Because the exact opening day shifts a little by panchang each year, treat the 18 October finale as your anchor.
One practical note: since 18 October falls on a Sunday, come in earlier in the week so there is time to stitch a blouse or add a fall and edging before the big evening. The women who look effortless on Saddula Bathukamma bought their cheera a week before, not the day before.

Three sarees for nine nights
Think of your Bathukamma wardrobe in three parts. Each does a different job across the festival, and most women buy from all three — come try them side by side at the store.
The hero pattu — for Saddula Bathukamma & Dussehra
Your finest drape, for the finale and the days around it. This is where the Telangana and South Indian silks come into their own: a handloom Pochampally ikat pattu, a Gadwal or Uppada, or a pure Kanjivaram or Banarasi in a jewel tone with a gold zari or temple border.
The nine-night cheeralu — bright, light, made to dance in
The real workhorses of the festival. You will be on your feet, clapping and circling for hours, so reach for softer, breathable weaves in happy solids with a contrast border — Narayanpet, Mangalagiri and soft handloom cottons. Buy two or three in different colours; you'll wear a new one every evening.
The daytime drape — for morning pujas & festive brunches
Not every Bathukamma moment is an evening in the courtyard. For morning pujas, family lunches and card parties, reach for something lighter and softer — a printed georgette or chiffon cheera in a pastel or ivory-gold. Easy to carry through a long day, rich enough to never look casual.
The Telugu weaves worth owning
Bathukamma is the season to wear our own looms. Telangana and Andhra give India some of its most loved handloom sarees, and each drapes and photographs differently — come see and feel them at our Abids showroom.
- Pochampally Ikat — Telangana's GI-tagged pride, woven in Bhoodan Pochampally just 40 km from Hyderabad. Tie-dyed diamonds and geometric borders, in both cotton for the nine nights and pure silk for the finale. See our Pochampally silks.
- Gadwal — a cotton or silk body with a rich pure-silk zari border and pallu; light to wear, grand to look at. Browse the silks.
- Uppada Jamdani — feather-light Andhra silk with fine woven jamdani motifs and delicate zari.
- Narayanpet — the everyday festive weave of the Deccan, with bold checks and contrast temple borders. Perfect for the early nights. See the cottons.
- Mangalagiri — crisp Andhra cotton and cotton-silk with trademark zari borders. Affordable, breathable, beautiful in solid jewel tones.
- Kanjivaram and Banarasi — for full grandeur: weddings within the festive season, or the finale itself. Browse our premium silks.
The colours of Bathukamma
If there is one way Bathukamma shoppers actually choose, it is by colour. The festival lives in the bright, auspicious end of the palette — the shades of the flowers themselves. Let colour lead, and the weave follow.
- Tangedu yellow & marigold — the signature Bathukamma bloom.
- Magenta, deep red & maroon — the gunuka celosia shade, always right for the finale.
- Peacock & forest green — regal against a gold zari border.
- Peacock blue — a jewel tone that photographs like a dream.
- Ivory & gold — the quiet, elevated choice for morning puja.
How to wear it well
A few small things separate a good Bathukamma drape from a great one. Pair a jewel-tone silk with a contrast blouse — a maroon or forest-green blouse on an ivory-gold saree, say — rather than a matching one. Keep the jewellery simple and gold: antique jhumkas and a pair of bangles are plenty when the saree is doing the work. Fresh jasmine, malli poolu, in the hair is the one accessory that never goes wrong. And for the nights you'll be dancing, choose a lighter weave and a well-stitched fall so the pleats stay put through hours of circling.
