What makes Pochampally ikat special
Pochampally ikat is one of India's most distinctive handwoven textiles, made in and around Bhoodan Pochampally in Telangana. It carries a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which means only cloth woven in the traditional way in this region can genuinely be called Pochampally ikat. The signature look — soft, slightly feathered geometric patterns — comes from a painstaking process where the yarn itself is tie-dyed before it is woven, so the design appears on both sides of the fabric.
Because genuine ikat is time-intensive and handwoven, the market is full of machine-printed imitations that copy the look at a fraction of the effort. Here is how to tell them apart before you buy.
1. Check both sides of the fabric
In authentic Pochampally ikat, the pattern is woven into the cloth, so it looks almost identical on the front and back. A printed imitation has a clear "right" side and a faded, blurry reverse. Flip the saree or fabric over — if the design nearly disappears on the back, it is printed, not woven.
2. Look for the soft, feathered edges
Real ikat motifs have gently blurred, hazy edges — a natural result of hand tie-dyeing the yarn. This slight "bleed" is a feature, not a flaw. Printed fabric, by contrast, has sharp, mechanically precise lines. If the pattern looks too perfect, be cautious.
3. Feel the weave
Handwoven ikat has a subtle irregularity you can feel — tiny variations in the weave that no two pieces share exactly. Pure handloom cotton and silk also breathe differently from polyester blends. When you handle our handloom silk sarees or handloom cotton sarees, that hand-made texture is part of what you are paying for.
4. Understand the price
Authentic handwoven ikat takes days to weeks to produce. If a "Pochampally silk saree" is priced like fast fashion, that is a red flag. A fair price reflects the craft and the weaver's time — genuine ikat is an investment piece, not a throwaway.
5. Buy from a source that knows the craft
The simplest safeguard is buying from a seller rooted in the region and transparent about sourcing. Sri Manisha Sarees has worked with handloom weavers since 1997, based right here in Hyderabad. We stock authentic Pochampally ikat as finished sarees and as fabric by the metre for those who want to design their own — something few online sellers offer.
