Pedana Kalamkari Hand-Block Soft Silk Saree in Deep Mustard with Red Designer Pallu & Gold Border

Mustard reads as gold in a photograph without any zari doing the work. That is the whole case for this one. Under lamps and daylight alike the body warms up on its own, and the red pallu then gives the eye somewhere to land.

The hand-block work is Pedana Kalamkari, printed in Pedana near Machilipatnam in coastal Andhra. Hand-cut teak blocks, dye laid down in stages, and the small irregularities at the repeat that tell you a hand moved the block rather than a roller. The border is gold and runs the length of both edges; the pallu switches to a deep red designer panel.

Soft silk makes it a four-hour saree rather than a two-hour one — no weight on the shoulder, and the pleats hold without starch. Total 6.3 m with the blouse piece.
