The base craft is ikat — yarn tied and dyed before weaving — but when metallic zari is introduced into the weft, the weaver has to carry a second, far less forgiving thread across the same shed. It slows the loom considerably, and it is why a heavy zari Pochampally costs several times a plain cotton one.
