Katan is the pure silk Banaras reserves for its better sarees: threads twisted from two filaments rather than one, which is what gives the cloth its firmness and its particular light. It does not drop soft like a georgette — it holds an edge, and the pleats stand.
The zari here is multicolour rather than plain gold, so the florals lift off the royal blue ground in several tones at once. That is meena work, and it is the reason this saree has more depth than a single-colour Banarasi at the same price.
