Elephants on a mustard ground. It is the oldest motif in Indian textile and still the one that makes people cross a room to ask where you bought the saree.
The Rajwada idiom is court work — processional animals, a repeating march across the body rather than a scatter of motifs. Here it is handprinted onto soft silk in mustard, which is the correct ground for it: the royal palettes were built on ochre and gold, not on pastels, and the elephants need a warm field to read against.
On handprinting
The blocks are hand-pulled, so no two elephants in the repeat are identical. Look along the border and you will find where the printer's hand lifted — slight variation in the impression, a motif sitting a hair off the line. That is the mark of the process, not a flaw in it, and it is the reason we cannot reorder this piece to match.
How to wear it
- A deep red or bottle-green blouse, to throw the mustard forward
- Oxidised silver or temple gold — this is not a saree for diamonds
- Hair pulled back; the pallu motifs deserve a clear shoulder
Soft silk, 6.3 m including the designer blouse piece. Light enough for a full day. Dry clean only, and keep it out of direct sun so the mustard does not go dull.
One piece only. At srimanishasarees.com or at our Abids store.
