The 3D ikkat is the weaver’s show-off piece. By shading the dyed yarn across the pattern, the surface appears to lift off the cloth — here in grey running into warm orange, so the fabric changes character depending on how the light falls on it.
It takes considerably longer to tie and dye than a plain ikkat, which is why you see fewer of them. Handwoven in Telangana in pure Pochampally cotton, sold by the metre.
Wears well as: a straight-cut kurta, a jacket, or a co-ord set where the pattern can run uninterrupted.
How much to order: 2.5 metres for a kurta, 3 metres with full sleeves, 5.5 metres for a full set.
Care: cold wash separately the first time, dry in shade, no bleach, medium iron.
