Three pieces of work go into this saree, and they are worth separating out.
The body is cotton linen in a mid green — dry, crisp, and cool to wear. The border is Kalamkari, attached rather than woven, which is a deliberate choice: an attached border lets a hand-painted Kalamkari panel with its full colour range be set against a plain ground, something a loom cannot do in a single pass. The pallu runs continuous with the same Kalamkari handwork rather than stopping at a seam. A designer blouse piece comes with it, cut to match.
Kalamkari itself is pen-work — kalam for pen, kari for craft — drawn and block-worked with vegetable dyes in coastal Andhra. The rust, indigo, ochre and black you see on the border are all plant-derived, which is why they age softly rather than fading flat.
