Black is the most underused colour in Indian festive dressing and the most effective. It takes every metal and every stone — gold, oxidised silver, pearls, polki, kundan — so it is the easiest saree in a wardrobe to accessorise, and it photographs cleanly under warm light where brighter colours blow out.
The leheriya waves keep the black from going flat: printed on the diagonal in the Kalamkari manner, they give the body direction and texture.
